WHITNEY WISE LONG: Loving The South, Showcasing Women Entrepreneurs, And Holding The Tiger By The Tail

Whitney Long is a people gatherer and a community builder, and she has made a significant impact among female entrepreneurs in the Southeast and beyond. After a successful career as a scout, stylist and contributing editor for some big names in print media like Coastal Living, Southern Accents, Southern Living and Better Homes & Gardens plus various special interest titles, Whitney took time off to focus on her favorite job – being a mom to four. After the youngest began school, Whitney longed to again find a creative outlet and the result was the co-founding with Cheri Leavy of The Southern Coterie. Whitney draws on her years of curating unique places and people for the lifestyle magazine industry to create connections, find strategic partners and cultivate a talented team for the Southern C Summit and Retreat. She enjoys working alongside some of the South’s most creative minds while supporting both established and upcoming brands. If you’re an entrepreneur, this episode and The Southern C just might be what you’re looking for!

This is an episode that we originally aired on our other podcast, Do It In Nature. We thought it was applicable to the entrepreneurial community as well, so we’re publishing it here. Few outdoor memories are better than the ones by a roaring fire pit with those you love. Sandy and Steve Schoettle, founders of Sea Island Forge, know this well. With a love for family and friends, artistry, the outdoors, and creating meaningful traditions, they began their company with their signature product, the Sea Island Forge Fire Kettle. They made their successful debut with it at the Sea Island Farmers Market in 2014, and they and their growing team of talented metalsmiths haven’t looked back as they debut new heirloom quality designs regularly. There is a difference between products you buy and throw away because they have no value or significance to you, and high quality, hand-crafted products that get passed down through the generations with the memories attached. Love is forged in the latter.

Richard Reutter, President and Owner of Caroline’s Cakes, is carrying on both his mom’s dream and her legacy as he runs this business. Caroline’s Cakes started back in 1982 when Caroline made a caramel cake for Richard’s christening. Not long after, word of mouth about the “world’s best caramel cake” had people all across the country asking how soon they could have one of these shipped to them. One order turned into ten which turned into a national business with staying power. Richard is a storyteller, has a great sense of humor, cares deeply about his team and customers, and is 100% committed to honoring his mom in this business. What an inspiration. We hope you enjoy our conversation!
